How to Find and Check a Licensed Tradie
Hello, you.
Some jobs are a Saturday. Some need a licensed tradie. Here's how to find a good one and check them first.
BEFORE YOU BOOK
- Ask friends and neighbours who they've used and would use again.
- Check their licence on your state's register. Search "[your state] check a builder licence" (in Queensland, it's the QBCC licence search).
- Get at least two written quotes that list the work, materials and timing.
- Ask if they have insurance, and get it in writing.
RED FLAGS
- Knocking on your door after a storm, offering a cheap deal today.
- Cash only, no quote, no paperwork.
- Asking for the full amount up front.
JOBS THAT NEED A LICENCE
Electrical and plumbing work must be done by a licensed tradie in every state. Structural and larger building work usually needs one too. If in doubt, ask your state's licensing body.
