How to Set Up an Instagram Account

Hello, you.

Instagram is free and works on any smartphone. Here's how to set it up and keep it private while you find your feet.

SET IT UP

  1. Download the Instagram app from the App Store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android).
  2. Open it and tap Create new account.
  3. Enter your mobile number or email, then the code Instagram sends you.
  4. Choose a password. Use a passphrase of four random words (see our password guide).
  5. Add your birthday. You need to be 13 or older.
  6. Choose a username. This is your @name, so pick something you're happy for people to see.
  7. Add a profile photo. A flower, your dog or your knitting is fine. It doesn't have to be your face.

KEEP IT PRIVATE

  1. Tap your profile picture (bottom right), then the three lines (top right).
  2. Go to Account privacy and turn on Private account. Now only people you approve can see your posts.
  3. Turn on two-factor authentication in Accounts Centre, then Password and security. It stops anyone getting in with just your password.

FIRST THINGS TO DO

  • Follow a few accounts you love: crafters, local shops, friends.
  • Like and comment before you post. That's how people find you.
  • Never share the codes Instagram texts you. Instagram will never ask for them.

Apps change their menus now and then. If a button has moved, the official help link below will have the latest steps.
