How to Lock Down Your Facebook Privacy

Hello, you.

Facebook's default settings share more than most of us want. One quiet cuppa and you can fix it.

RUN THE PRIVACY CHECKUP

  1. Open Facebook and tap your profile picture or the menu.
  2. Go to Settings & privacy, then Privacy Checkup.
  3. Work through each topic. It walks you through who sees your posts, your profile and your contact details.

THE FOUR SETTINGS THAT MATTER MOST

  • Who can see your future posts: set to Friends.
  • Limit past posts: one tap changes every old public post to Friends.
  • Who can look you up by email or phone: set to Friends or Only me.
  • Two-factor authentication: turn it on in Accounts Centre, then Password and security.

GOOD HABITS

  • Don't post your full birthday, address or holiday dates while you're away.
  • Ignore friend requests from people you're already friends with. It's usually a cloned account.
  • Those fun quizzes ("your first car plus your street") often collect the answers to security questions. Skip them.

Apps change their menus now and then. If a button has moved, the official help link below will have the latest steps.
