Unfinished Knitting Projects: The 8 Reasons a Knit Stalls

Hello.

Somebody at group asked how the jumper was coming along and you said fine. It has one sleeve. It lives in a bag under the bed, beside a single sock and a cardigan for a baby who is now nine.

Here is the thing about unfinished knitting projects. The basket is not a to-do list. It is a record. Every piece in it stopped for a reason, and most of those reasons have nothing to do with whether you are a good knitter.

The eight reasons a knit stalls

The boring middle. Rows and rows of the same thing, with the exciting bit behind you and the finish nowhere in sight.

The mistake twelve rows back. You saw it. You kept going. Now you cannot unsee it.

The pattern that lied. It happens more than anyone admits.

The yarn ran out and the dye lot did not match.

The needles are in something else. Which is in a different bag. Which is under a different bed.

The person it was for. They grew, moved or stopped being someone you knit for.

Winter ended. Nobody finishes a jumper in a Queensland January.

The fun bit is over. Some knitters are in it for the start. That is a style, not a fault.

Castonitis, pardoned

Starting a new one while nine wait is not a crime. The first ten rows of a new project are, for a lot of us, the whole hobby. The new one is allowed.

The second sock, excused

Second sock syndrome is real and it is fine. One finished sock was always a thing worth owning. It proves you can. That is enough.

Frogging, blessed

If you do decide to pull one out, unravelled yarn is simply yarn again, ready for something else. Nothing was wasted. You got the evenings.

When somebody asks about the jumper

Try: "It's resting." Then ask about theirs. Most of the time the question behind the question is "do you have one of those too?" The answer, for nearly everyone, is yes.

The book

Be Better @ Unfinished Knitting is permission in paperback. It covers why knits stall, what to say when someone asks about the jumper and why a single sock was always worth owning. No frogging orders. No finishing targets. Just evenings without the sinking. It comes with a free printable Second Sock Amnesty.
